Things To Know About the Dr Sebi Diet

What is the Dr. Sebi diet? Does it work?

One of the benefits of choosing to follow a healthy diet is that you’ll feel better. Your body can eliminate the toxins in many processed foods. For a diet that can do that, plus help you lose weight, you can check out the Dr. Sebi Diet. You may have heard of the Dr. Sebi diet and wondered what the heck it’s all about. And who is Dr. Sebi anyway? Looked into the trendy new Dr. Sebi diet.  It’s a healthier way to eat than the nutritionally lacking, fast food-heavy standard American diet, there are some aspects that seem concerning.

Who is Dr. Sebi?

Alfredo Bowman, better known as Dr. Sebi, was a self-proclaimed healer and herbalist. He was self-educated,  he was not a medical doctor and held no Ph.D.

An obituary describes his controversial health claims, such as curing leukemia and AIDS. These and similar assertions resulted in a 1993 lawsuit that ended with the court ordering Dr. Sebi’s organization to stop making these claims. Dr. Sebi reportedly died in 2016.

What is the Dr. Sebi diet?

Dr. Sebi claimed that disease is a result of mucus and acidity in the body, and argued that diseases cannot exist in an alkaline environment. The program, which includes a very strict dietary regimen and expensive supplements, claims to detoxify the body of disease and restore alkalinity.

The diet restricts animal products of any kind, and overall focuses on vegan eating, but with much stricter rules. For example, it restricts seedless fruits and only permits Sebi's approved list of "natural growing grains."

What does it mean to alkalize the body?

An alkaline diet is based on the premise of controlling the body's pH with the foods you eat. Because the foods our body uses leave behind metabolic waste, the idea is that the waste can possess a pH varying from alkaline to acidic. The human body has different pH levels in different areas, with organs like the stomach being more acidic while blood is more alkaline.

One of the bodily products that is directly affected by the foods we eat is urine, which is a controller for managing pH in the blood.

The broader group of "alkaline diets" is based on the issue of metabolic waste, and the Dr. Sebi diet is one of many. They are healthy enough in that they encourage eating more healthy plant-based foods. There is no research, however, behind alkalinizing the body, and science does not support the claims made.

Here is a brief overview of the foods he recommends.

Vegetables: Amaranth greens, bell peppers, cucumber, avocado, chayote,  dandelion greens, garbanzo beans, izote, kale, lettuce (all except Iceberg), mushrooms (all except shiitake), nopales, okra, olives, onions, sea vegetables, squash, tomato,, tomatillo, turnip greens, zucchini, watercress, wild arugula

Is it safe?

The Dr. Sebi diet is restrictive, and it may not include enough important nutrients, which the diet’s website does not clearly acknowledge.

If a person adopts this diet, they may benefit from consulting a healthcare professional, who may recommend additional supplements.

Dr. Sebi Diet vs. a vegan diet

With all the plant-based foods on the approved Dr. Sebi food list, it’s understandable to consider this just another repackaging of a vegan diet. But, there are some key differences between the Dr. Sebi diet and a vegan diet. Vegan diets allow soy products, as well as beans and legumes of any type, while none of these exist on the Dr. Sebi food list.

The exclusion of beans and legumes makes it incredibly difficult to take in adequate amounts of protein on the Dr. Sebi diet, and this is a concern for anyone who follows the diet for the long term. And while typical vegan diets allow for any kind of fruit and vegetables, the Dr. Sebi diet restricts those that it considers to be too acidic. As such, most people are likely to find this diet entirely too restrictive.

Summary

No scientific research supports the Dr. Sebi diet. However, it may bring some of the benefits associated with other plant-based diets. Eating more whole fruits and vegetables could have positive effects on health. It could also help a person to lose weight if that is a goal.

The restrictions of the Dr. Sebi diet, however, could pose risks. It is crucial to ensure that the body is taking in enough nutrients, including vitamin B-12, through supplementation, if necessary.

Certain people may be more susceptible to the risks associated with the Dr. Sebi diet. Among them are adolescents, women who are breastfeeding, and older adults.

The diet’s proponents recommend products that can be expensive, and no scientific evidence supports their use. A more healthful approach may be to eat more plant-based foods and to supplement any missing nutrients.

It may be a good idea to conduct info research and consult a healthcare professional before trying any new diet.
